Marina Del Rey: Julie’s Fantasy Styled Trash The Dress Shoot
What can I say about Julie? She was one of my favorite brides ever – not only drop-dead gorgeous, she’s also the one of the sweetest people you could ever hope to meet, incredibly smart, and a ton of fun. After shooting her and Thomas’s wedding at the Hollins House in Santa Cruz back in August (click here to see their wedding), I wanted to do something fun for her “trash the dress” shoot.
As many of you probably already know, I’ve been collecting vintage wedding dresses since I was a teenager in Saint Louis, and the collection has followed me from there to Rhode Island, to London, and finally out to California. Julie’s actual wedding dress was an incredibly gorgeous blush pink tulle Vera Wang gown. She didn’t want to ruin it, so I pulled a 1950’s tiered lace strapless number for her that I found at one of my favorite vintage stores, Shareen Vintage, in downtown Los Angeles. We started with that, and then did a few in her own dress to, being careful to keep it out of the sand and water.
I made a decision about a year ago to only buy furniture for my house that could double as a photo-shoot prop, and this was the perfect chance to make use of it. Gavin and I got up early, hauled my bed out to the beach, and here are the results. After sending off the images to her and Thomas, I got an e-mail back from him fifteen minutes later reading, “OMG I’m married to a model!!!” …tell us something we didn’t know!
